Cape Town Photography Tour and Photography Workshop

CAPE TOWN PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR, PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP & VOLUNTEER PHOTOGRAPHY

This 7-day Cape Town photography tour and photography workshop arose from my experience with travelling in Cape Town. I’ve been to Cape Town 8 times since Dec. 2012 (10 trips to South Africa) and I spend most of my time in Khayelitsha. In 2013, I implemented a women’s mobile photography program there through my The Heart of a Woman Project (THOAW) initiative.

I have noticed that the majority of tourists that visit Cape Town do not spend time in the townships. I would love to see that change as some of my best experiences have taken place in Khayelitsha and other townships in Cape Town. I feel that tourists are missing out which is why a part of this tour will have us spending time in Khayelitsha. First, as we get to know it through tourism that is offered and then by volunteering as a photographer.

BE A VOLUNTEER PHOTOGRAPHER IN CAPE TOWN

On this unique 7-day photo tour and photography workshop in Cape Town, you’ll have the opportunity to work with THOAW and be a volunteer photographer. We will partner with a community project and non-profit organization that want to use photography as a tool for awareness and marketing. We will teach mobile photography to the women that run or are a part of a community project so they may bring awareness to what they do in their efforts to fundraise and/or attract more business. THOAW will provide donated used iPhones to the organization. We’ll also work with a small non-profit organization to capture what they do. You will retain all copyright to your images but will donate licensing to the images to help them with their fundraising and digital communications efforts.

Being a volunteer photographer gives you time to immerse in a place. It allows for cross-cultural exchange and gives you an experience you won’t have as a tourist that spends a few hours in Khayelitsha. This trip is more than a photo tour; it is a meaningful experience as you volunteer in Africa.

The Heart of a Woman Project: A women’s mobile photography initiative

Andrea established The Heart of a Woman Project (THOAW) after a conversation with the managing director of eKhaya eKasi in December 2012. It began as a way to help the women-led and supported non-profit community project in Khayelitsha learn mobile photography so they can share what they do, bring awareness and tell their stories.

Over 11-days, 9 women were taught photography using donated previously-owned iPhones so they could photograph their products, document their events and tell their stories. Andrea came up with an idea to create postcards from their best photo as a way for the ladies and eKhaya eKasi to generate income. In 2019, postcards sales remain a significant source of income for eKhaya eKasi.

Cape Town Photography Workshop

The other part of the trip will be spent exploring Cape Town from the iconic Table Mountain to the penguins of Boulders Beach and places not on the tourist trail. There will be ample photo opportunities, at the right times on this 7-day Cape Town photography tour and photography workshop.

Whether you enjoy taking photos with your smartphone, mirrorless or DSLR camera, you’re welcome to join us, just bring your love for photography.

Much of what I will teach in this photography workshop will apply to any camera as we dive into the art of seeing and storytelling as it applies to travel, landscape and non-profit/documentary photography.

For your non-photography companions, there will be plenty to see and do, and they will have photographic opportunities should they wish to join in.
